Nokia has presented the UI Concept Proposal for Symbian^4 (pronounced Symbian four). The corresponding major contribution proposals are Orbit and Direct UI. Orbit is a collection of extension libraries on top of Qt. This new Qt-based UI layer is intended to supersede the S60 Avkon UI Framework. Direct UI supports touch and hybrid devices. Symbian^4 is expected to be functionally complete in the second half of 2010, supporting devices shipping early 2011 onwards. Symbian^4 has a big focus on user experience including Direct UI - a complete makeover of the touch UI - and widespread enhancements to the application suite. More information about Roadmap for the Symbian Platform is available on the website.
