T-Mobile has been performing LTE tests in Vienna, Austria. With 20 LTE base stations setup with three sectors each, supplied by Huawei, using the 2.6 GHz frequency, it achieved a downlink speed of 35 megabits/sec and an uplink speed of 31 megabits/sec with a 20 MHz carrier (unlike the current 5 MHz wide carrier used today in HSPA networks).
The tests were able to ping a server setup at T-Mobile’s headquarters in only 21 milliseconds compared to the current HSPA technology in live networks have a round trip time of around 100-110 ms. Using a 5 MHz carrier for easy comparison with HSPA, if operators simply upgraded their HSPA equipment to LTE equipment, the speed would have been 8.75 MBit/s.
