SMS for the visually impaired! Nokia has released new application called Braille Reader that helps vision-impaired users read SMS text messages. Developed in collaboration with the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired and the Tampere University, Braille Reader is still in beta, and is only compatible with certain Nokia handsets that provide vibration feedback. Nokia’s Braille Reader uses the Braille alphabet and leverages on tactile feedback.
Nokia touchscreen phones powered by the S60 5th Edition operating system will support the beta software – handsets like, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5530, Nokia 5230 and Nokia X6. Nokia Braille Reader is available as a free download from Nokia Beta Labs. Video follows after the jump.
