The internal battery can be charged through a USB 2.0 port or through the solar panels on its backside. Two hours of sunlight is enough to power your handset for 30-60 minutes of extra talk-time, depending on whether you use 3G or EDGE (2G).
The Solar Surge for the 2G iPod Touch will be available later this month for $70. The Solar Surge will be available for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS for $69.95 sometime in the 4Q of 2009.

There’s probably a trade-off between benefit and costs, and it probably costs too much with little benefit to build a solar panel into the iPhone.
