The performance breakthrough, which sets a new benchmark for an integrated smartphone platform on a multicore system, will enable handsets to run several graphically-rich applications simultaneously, integrating HD or 3D video and social networking with online map-navigation and augmented reality, for example. It will also dramatically enhance the responsiveness and experience of the smartphone user interface.
“We have achieved a major step change in the performance of a handset platform, paving the way for mainstream smartphones to handle highly sophisticated and engaging applications and content,” said Marc Cetto, Senior Vice President and head of 3G and Multimedia division at ST-Ericsson. “The dual-core U8500 platform will enable handset makers to create smartphones with PC-style performance, while still maintaining a long battery life.”ST-Ericsson’s U8500 smartphone platform, which is already sampling to customers, integrates a state of the art HSPA+ modem and application processor featuring dual-core ARM Cortex-A9. It can support a full high-definition camcorder, a 20 megapixel still camera, display advanced 3D graphics and support multi-channel home-theater audio quality. Its power-efficient design allows 120 hours of audio playback or 12 hours of full HD video playback on one battery charge, when equipped with a standard 1,000mAH battery.
The U8500 platform’s high level of integration enables handset manufacturers to produce small, slim line smartphones.
The U8500 is designed on the STMicroelectronics’ leading-edge, low-power 45nm process, which is also a key enabler to achieve the performance demonstrated today.
