New Distributed Antenna System to boost network capacity at NRG Stadium; ready for 2015 football season
The Houston Texans' season kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 15 and football fans can now enjoy more speed and power on their wireless devices on gameday than ever before. New for the 2015-2016 NFL season, Verizon Wireless invested more than $12 million to construct and activate a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and other advanced XLTE network technology at NRG Stadium.
"Our objective is to provide our fans with an unparalleled experience at NRG Stadium, which is why we are thrilled that our long-time partner, Verizon, is investing in leading-edge technology to keep our great fans connected on game day," said Jamey Rootes, president of the Houston Texans.
Dramatic Boost to Data Capacity
DAS are networks of cables and antennas, linked with an on-site cellular base station, to carry a strong signal deep into arenas, hotels, concert venues and similar structures. The system at NRG Stadium consists of 783 antennas placed strategically throughout the facility, designed to increase capacity by four times the existing system. With the new wireless infrastructure, more users will be able to share photos, download content, send messages, surf the internet and use other applications at faster peak speeds than before.
"Houston customers demand top speed, power and reliability and we work hard to be the very best in the business," said Keith Gladhill, president – Houston/Gulf Coast Region, Verizon Wireless. "At a venue like NRG Stadium, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors all texting, tweeting, uploading and downloading on their smartphones and tablets at once, we're proud to invest in a state-of-the-art system that will provide Verizon customers with the best experience possible."
Not only will fans notice increased capacity inside the stadium, but tailgaters and pedestrians in the parking lot around NRG Stadium will benefit from increased wireless capacity and coverage due to an outdoor Verizon DAS system in place at the stadium.
Network Game Plan for Super Bowl LI
The DAS activation is the latest step in Verizon's extensive preparation plans for the Super Bowl to arrive in Houston in 2017. As the official wireless provider of the NFL, a special team of network technicians will work over the next 18 months to closely monitor, manage and modify the network at NRG Stadium in real-time to ensure best performance for the big game. During the 2015 game alone, Verizon customers at the stadium racked up more than 25 million wireless data connections – nearly 25,000 per minute.
"When Super Bowl fans from around the world arrive in Houston, we want to deliver consistent, reliable performance at NRG Stadium and throughout the greater metropolitan area that our customers have come to expect from Verizon," said Gladhill.
World's Largest Rodeo Rides on America's Largest Network
As a longtime corporate sponsor of the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, held annually each March at NRG Stadium, Verizon will also utilize the DAS to provide reliable wireless service to the rodeo's two million visitors each year, along with rodeo staff, vendors and volunteer network.
