After having launched the world’s first IMS Virtual Reality Video Calling solution at Mobile World Congress, Summit Tech will demonstrate at CTIA Super Mobility 2015 the next generation of Virtual Reality Rich Communication Services (RCS), supporting voice and video calling, messaging, group chat and social presence.
Through Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR, users can connect to remote locations streaming immersive 360° live video. They can invite their friends through standard operator issued IMS smartphones (with no app required), VR headsets, or WebRTC-enabled browsers with overlaid video calling and RCS messaging. With a wave of their hand, users will experience enhanced VR communication services through motion-controlled 3D interfaces – giving new meaning to telepresence.
The 360° video calls are streamed directly from the HD GoPro 360° camera rigs or through Giroptic’s soon-to-be-launched 360cam. This innovative form of communication allows people to view and look around in an immersive 360° view the location they are calling. They can also see virtual 3D environments such as conference rooms, movie theatres, and concert halls. Now callers can share their virtual reality experience with their contacts in real time with RCS Video share through VoLTE/RCS/WebRTC capable devices.
By basing the service on VoLTE and ViLTE, Virtual Reality communication works with existing industry standards by routing the call through wireless operators’ IMS networks supporting IR.94 video calling or IR.92 voice calling, including recently added support for VR Social Presence, NAB and Enriched Calling. In addition to connecting with VR headsets and IMS smartphones, the 360° video calls can also be streamed as an RCS Video Share session to regular Android, iOS and Microsoft phones through RCS-enabled downloadable apps for tablets and PCs or web browsers connected to RCS Web Gateways.
“In a market which has become resigned to innovation coming from OTT players, we have come up with a whole new way for wireless operators to retake the initiative,” commented Alido Di Giovanni, President of Summit Tech. “It is time for operators to better leverage their IMS deployments and provide something that can truly excite consumers again, beyond just getting faster Internet or cheaper data packages. This is one of the many ways they can begin to amaze people.”
Summit Tech will also demonstrate the Innovative IMS enabled Connected Car and a new operator-managed Home Automation and Security system. To schedule a one-on-one demonstration of VR 360° video calling, the IMS-enabled Connected Car or the Home Automation system, please contact summit@sonuspr.com.
